Get Out - [Movie Recommendation]

Movie Recommendation & Review

Written by: Izlem Adanir

Racism in America is brutal as well as it is in other countries. Racism is an ugly reality that is happening around the world and the film Get Out produced by Jason Blum is a horror movie that has a satirical premise. The film is not autobiographical but it deals with the issue of racism and explains how twisted and how it psychologically affects people and the anxiety that is created as a result of racism. The story is of a black photographer called Chris from New York going for a weekend visit to his white girlfriend's parents. Throughout his visit, he has trouble sleeping which leads his girlfriend’s mother to put him into a hypnotherapy session. During the hypnotherapy, Chris confesses to some of his regrets and sinks into a void which is called the Sunken Place. After this scene, everything starts to take a turn into the horror side, as Chris acknowledges that there is something wrong with the family and that the people who were working in the house were people who were missing. In the end, it turns out that the family would bring out black people into their houses to trance them and lock them into the sunken place in order to put the white people's brains in them so that they could control their bodies. This film tries to project the horrifying and absurdity that is created by racism. Even though the film is not real or an autobiography it gives out the message of how cruel racism is.
